The Site of Community Importance (SCI) ITB041112 "Giara" is part of the European project aimed to establish the "Natura 2000 ecological network", which was launched in 1992 with the Council Directive 92/43 / EEC, known as the "Habitat" Directive.
The project for the protection of biodiversity has included the Site "Giara di Gestury" due to the presence of rare habitats and species with a high natural value that make it unique worldwide. The morphology of the basaltic volcanic plateau is singular, as it is characterized by its perfect tabular form, contrasting the soft, rounded shapes of the surrounding hills.
Other important elements are the paùlis, which are shallow depressions that are able to collect and store rainwater throughout the year. These have been classified as priority habitat 3170 "Mediterranean temporary ponds" in the Natura 2000 Network list.
In addition, the site is the home of an endemic breed of horses called Giara horses (Equus caballus giarae). This breed is a priceless heritage and an absolute rarity, since it is the last colony of wild horses in Europe.
