The outline of the Giara plateau is mostly straight and is only interrupted by some grooves from the heads of the valleys. The top of the plateau has a limited number of access points, which can be reached by winding paths called scalas that go over the steep slopes of the Giara. These scalasshow clear evidence of consistent human presence during ancient times.
Scala Cabirada deserves special mention. It is a narrow path with natural steps that ends near a popular spring in the village of Assolo. The scala passes between Nuraghe Sassaioni and Nuraghe Riu Crabas (Crabas River) and then continues on for another kilometer until it meets a municipal road.
